I was thinking about Peter today. Peter denied Jesus three times. And somehow, what touches me most about that story is not even the fact that Peter failed. It is what Jesus did after Peter failed. Jesus knew everything. He knew Peter had been afraid. He knew what he had said. He knew that when the moment came, Peter had not been as strong as he thought he would be. And still… Jesus came back for him.
He did not say, “You disappointed me, so I can never trust you again.” He did not say, “Peter, you had your chance.” He did not cancel his purpose. Instead, He restored him and told him: “Feed my sheep.”

Just sit with that for a moment. The man who had denied knowing Jesus was still trusted with people.
Still trusted with leadership.
Still trusted with responsibility.
Still trusted with purpose.
I thought… how different God can be from us. Sometimes we make one mistake and punish ourselves for years.
We say, “I should have known better.” “I ruined everything.” “How could I have done that?” “Maybe I am just not good enough.”
Yet God seems to say, “Yes, you fell. Now get up. We still have work to do.” That is grace.
Not pretending the mistake never happened.
Not avoiding responsibility.
Not calling wrong right.
But understanding that what you did does not have to become who you are. And maybe some of the things we go through are the very things that soften us. Failure teaches humility. Pain teaches compassion. Needing mercy teaches us how to give mercy. Being restored teaches us how to restore somebody else. Peter knew what it was to fall. So perhaps when he met another person who had fallen, he could look at them differently. And isn’t that life?
God keeps giving us chances. Another morning. Another conversation. Another opportunity to apologise. Another opportunity to love better. Another opportunity to handle things differently. Another chance to make a decision that looks nothing like yesterday’s decision. And what amazes me is that even after everything we have done, God still gives us responsibilities.
Children to guide. People to love. Ideas to build. Work to do. People who listen when we speak. People whose lives somehow cross ours for a reason. Maybe God is not looking at you through the lens of your worst chapter. Maybe you are. And perhaps that is where we need to learn something from Him.
If God still sees something worth using… If God still gives you another morning… If God still puts ideas in you… If God still places people in your life… If God still calls you forward… maybe you need to stop sentencing yourself for something God is trying to redeem.
Forgive yourself. Learn. Make amends where you can. Take responsibility. But then, please… live. There can still be purpose after the mistake. There can still be love after heartbreak. There can still be dignity after falling. There can still be responsibility after failure. There can still be a beautiful chapter after the chapter you wish you could tear out of the book.
So maybe the question is no longer: “How could I have messed up like that?” Maybe the question now is: “God has given me another chance. What am I going to do with it?” Because if God has not finished with you… perhaps you should not finish with yourself. ❤️
